APC condemns Senate's move to investigate Kwara bye-election

- The APC has condemned moves by the Nigerian Senate to investigate the recently concluded Kwara bye-election
- The ruling party described the move by the upper chamber as an abuse of its legislative powers
- The APC accused the Nigerian Senate leadership of turning the hallowed chamber into an election tribunal
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned moves by the Nigerian Senate to investigate the recently concluded Kwara bye-election.
In a statement sent to Legit.ng by the national publicity secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the ruling party described the move by the upper chamber as an abuse of its legislative powers.
The ruling party also accused the Nigerian Senate leadership of turning the hallowed chamber into an election tribunal.
Part of the statement read: “The questionable decision by the Senate to “investigate” the circumstances leading to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loss in the last Saturday’s House of Representatives' bye-election in Kwara state must be seen for what it is - an abuse of the powers of the legislative arm of government to pursue selfish political ends.
“While the All Progressives Congress (APC) condemns this curious Senate investigation of the bye-election which took place in the home state of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, we also find it curious that other bye-election conducted in Katsina and Bauchi States have not received similar attention from the Senate.
“It is clear that the sweet victory by the APC House of Representatives candidate, Alhaji Raheem Olawuyi-Ajuloopin in the by-election has hit the overrated federal lawmakers from Kwara state badly.
“The usurpers occupying the Senate leadership seat have no altruistic intentions other than to manipulate state institutions to pursue personal interests and massage battered ego.
“They should understand that, like the rest of the country, Kwara state has seen enough of impunity and misrule represented by the self-serving leaders of the PDP.
“Turning the Senate into an electoral tribunal only shows Nigerians that the PDP has not changed from its odious practice of compromising the system to promote illusionary ambitions.”

Recall that the Kwara state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed described the bye-elections as a contest between the PDP and security agents rather than among political parties.
Governor Ahmed, in a statement sent to Legit.ng by his senior special assistant on media and communications, Dr Muyideen Akorede, said reports available to him from the four local government areas in which elections were held, indicated wide-spread harassment, arrests and intimidation of PDP members and supporters by security personnel.
He, however, commended PDP members and supporters across the federal constituency for standing their ground and defying the threats posed by the security agents by coming out to exercise their franchise at the risk of harm and arrest.
