Cyclone Idai: Woman gives birth to baby girl atop a mango tree

- Cyclone Idai left over 1,000 people dead and scores homeless with many still unaccounted for
- Amelia and her family were caught up in the storms and opted to climb up a tree
- Together with her son, the two stayed clung together on tree branches for two days
- Her newborn daughter was named Sara and the family is now staying at an accommodation centre
Amidst the catastrophic destruction and deaths that characterised Cyclone Idai which hit Beira, Mozambique between March 4 to March 21, a heavily pregnant woman was also caught up in the melee.
The woman identified simply as Amelia was forced to climb up a mango tree with her two-year-old son and stayed up there after her home was swept away.
Close to a day after finding a 'new home', she delivered a baby girl named Sara as reported by BBC Africa.
This was in the early stages of heavy storms and flooding in the central region of the former Portuguese colony that left over 1,000 people dead also in Malawi and Zimbabwe.
“I had no choice but to climb a tree, I was alone with my son. Then the pain started, and I had no one around to help me .In a few hours, I gave birth to my baby girl Sara, on top of that mango tree. I was completely alone with Sara and my son," she said.
The family would later stay clung together on tree branches for two days until humanitarian bodies came through.
Other unconfirmed reports indicated the traumatised woman may have lost her husband or he could be among those still missing to date as a result of the deadly tropical cyclone.
The 20-year-old mother of two was taken to an accommodation center.
